BLEPHAROPLASTY – PLASTIC SURGERY OF UPPER AND LOWER EYELIDS
The eyelids are highly exposed therefore the first signs of aging skin occur in this area. The skin loses its elasticity with age and surplus skin appears on the eyelids. This can also be due to further factors that are congenital or due to skin type, regimen, allergies, kidney disease, etc.
Eyelid defects need not just be aesthetic defects, but also functional causing a feeling of fatigue, eye pain, tears, impaired vision, headaches, etc. It is possible to perform eyelid surgery separately to the upper and lower eyelids or combined surgery as agreed with the patient and depending on the condition of the tissue.
Preparation for eyelid plastic surgery
Medication containing acetylsalicylic acid (Acylpyrin, Aspirin, Anopyrin, etc.), must not be taken three weeks before eyelid plastic surgery and no cream should be applied to the eyelids the day before surgery. You will come for surgery without makeup and contact lenses.
Course of eyelid plastic surgery
Eyelid plastic surgery involves the removal of surplus eyelid skin and the separation and removal of fat pockets. The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia because cooperation is required by the patient particularly for lower eyelid surgery.
Post-operative care after eyelid surgery
Most of the swelling and bruising will disappear in about week. The stitches are removed on the seventh day after surgery and it is recommended sleeping on the back in the first several days after surgery to avoid one-sided eyelid swelling. In addition, it is essential that you apply sterile compresses with cool boric eyewash every 3-6 hours.
The lasting effect of eyelid plastic surgery is highly individual, 5 – 10 years as stated in literature, but we know from experience of cases that there can be a great difference in years either way. It is possible to repeat the surgery.
